RAM TUFF!!

I just wanted to "throw" some props out to the young men of the Pine Richland boys lacrosse team. I'm working with some of the players two nights a week. It's anything but a conventional "conditioning" program...........go ahead and ask them.
The focus is about the N.O.W. and "Long Term Development"............ not a quick fix.

-kettlebells
-med balls
-ground contact drills and much, much more!

I've started to video the sessions and will keep everyone aware of the "shows" when they are up.

Interested?

Sport Speed

A question was asked of me a few weeks ago. "Can playing one sport affect my speed in another sport?"

The answer is YES, and depending on your desired outcome, it can affect your play in a positive or negative manner.
Each sport and each position has a different set of motor qualities required to be successful. Woven within these sport demands are various ground contact times involved in sprinting, jumping and changing directions.

So, playing linebacker for your football team can slow you up playing middie for your lacrosse team.

Train the qualities needed for your game!

Jack-In-The-Box

Well, as the football season comes to an end, the off-season "training" programs will be distributed to the players in preparation for next year.

So, make way for the Jack-In-The-Box! The gridiron player locked inside the cage for training the squat, bench press and deadlift.

Players need to step back and look at their sport. Now tell me..........is it played inside a box?

-how many joints are involved during your game?
-how fast do you need to be for your game?
-how many planes of motion are used during your game?

The list can go on and on.

Train the "movements" not the muscles!

Sending Another To The "Lake"!

I just wanted to congratulate Jake McAndrew on his commitment to Mercyhurst College and joining the Laker Lacrosse Team! Jake is a very hard working, young, student-athlete with a great deal of potential in front of him!

Jake has been working with me for some time now and his development as an athlete continues to grow!

Here is what he has to say:

"I have been training with Shawn Moody at Stick With it Fitness for some time now and I can tell you that the change in my strength, speed and play on the field are amazing. Everyone wants to know what I am doing – especially my coaches. Shawn doesn’t just bring some cones and a ladder to a field and strap a parachute on your back. He studies your individual mechanics and pays a lot of attention to your strengths and weaknesses. I think Shawn’s focus on core strength training and explosiveness are the key to making you a better athlete, no matter what sport you play. I’ve learned that you can’t focus on just strength, or just speed or just agility, you have to develop all three. Shawn does that. He makes things interesting and understandable and that makes me want to work harder. I recommend Shawn to anyone who wants to get better."

The Qualities of the Athlete and Sport?

Everyday I see it published on the web, in local print advertisements and even listen as people discuss it at sporting events........ Some local S.A.Q. guru has a "sport-specific" program for athletes?

What does this mean?

The "ONLY" thing that is sport-specific, is the sport itself.
ALL TRAINING is generalized. There is absolutely no way of duplicating the neurological demands of the sport. There are just too many factors.

Lifting weights, sprint work, agility training, ALL generalized.

As a coach you need to understand the demands of the athlete and the sport.
Look for the common movement patterns, the necessary strength required and proper application of speed.

So, stop running through agility ladders with your lacrosse helmet on and stick in hand. It's not the purpose of the agility ladder.

(BTW, I always wondered why hockey players didn't run through agility ladders with their sticks if this is such sport-specific training?........hhmmmmmmmm?)

It's about LONG-TERM Development.........It's about the N.O.W.

Dogs on another Planet?

Just trying to spread the word about a great match-up within tonight's WPIAL football play.
I have great athletes playing on both teams on both sides of the ball!

According to the Cranberry Eagle newspaper: Hampton's Nate Winek, Andrew Bly and Steven Magister have combined for 705 yards and five touchdowns, and are averaging 5.9 yards per carry as a group.

I wish both teams the best of luck. Remember to play hard and keep picking yourself up no matter how difficult things may become!

κίνηση

Ok, it's Greek for "movement".

- movement is life
- movement is sport
- movement is what we train

What's the point? Well it seems that coaches and trainers often debate what exercises you should perform to increase sport performance.
Don't debate the exercise.........train the movement.

Can't teach the power clean, don't know how to power clean? κίνηση!!!
The medium should not dictate the movement motor pattern...

Take a look at my man Pete........moving into "triple extension"

Now when, where and how? Well that's for another post!

Invictus

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

SUCCESS

"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." - Vincent T. Lombardi

I often hear (or read) of various performance and conditioning coaches touting their athletes as if taking credit for the athlete's success.

I don't make the shots, score the goals or play pressure defense.......... in fact I don't play the game!

But whether on the field, pitch, court, course, mat or platform ( you get the picture!) I can enhance your ability to move. Accept, Redirect and Project!

Remember it's all about the N.O.W. (you don't know?........ask me. smoody@stickwithitfitness.com)

RAIDER PROPS!

I just wanted to share some "older" news on some of the great accomplishments the Seneca Valley Raiders Lacrosse program has had.

We've spent time working with the entire Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. And I've worked with some of their players more intensely in private groups.

They are a "true" testament to embracing the training and program to help elevate their game!

I can't say enough about these guys!
SV Varsity Players Named All League and All-American
Colin O'Donoghue #17 (Attack), Brent Rotz #29 (Midfield) and Vince Ulizio #18 (Defense) were voted by the WPIAL coach's organization to the All League team. These players were selected by the coaches representing the North Conference.

Both Colin and Brent were also selected as WPIAL All Americans for the 2009 season. The WPIAL coach's association selects only seven players as All-American from 29 WPIAL boy's lacrosse teams.

This is the first year Seneca Valley has had more than one All-American. We congratulate them for their outstanding contribution to this year's team.

Brent Rotz To Represent WPIAL
In Senior Showcase!

Seneca Valley midfielder Brent Rotz was selected to represent Western Pennsylvania in the National Senior Showcase sponsored by US Lacrosse at Bryant University in Rhode Island. The event will be held on June 20th. Each year the WPIAL coach's organization selects one player to represent our area. Brent will be playing for the East team.

What We Are All About

Dear Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends

There is an overwhelming amount of training information for almost every athletic sport that we can participate in. You don't have to travel far or dig deep into the research to locate what you are looking for. Everywhere you look there are “guru's” providing sport specific camps, speed and agility training and professional athletes endorsing “neon green gadgets” to take you to the next level!

This greatly saddens and frustrates me. Lost amongst the parachutes, bands, weighted sleds and jumping shoes is also the patience and respect for the process involved in true athletic development. The “quick-fix” solution that pollutes the late night infomercials has invaded the sporting world and it is deteriorating the very fabric of performance training. Despite what these “guru's” attempt to “sell” you or proclaim, there are no hidden secrets or special pieces of equipment that will launch your athleticism to the elite-level.

Our philosophy is rooted in human movement, and movement transcends all sports!

We understand that the human body is made up of a complex matrix of systems and the importance of no separation of these systems during training.

We are focused on the development of the complete athlete and this takes an holistic approach. Our training encompasses all variables of sports performance that revolve around the primal fundamental movement patterns. Regardless of your sport there are commonalities in movement patters.

Our programming looks at the “big picture”. We look at long-term development and the proper structure of the athletic foundation. We place a heavy emphasis on the proper biomechanics while being mindful of the physiological demands of your sport.

It's a journey that takes patience, time and should truly be enjoyed. To reach our top potential we must start at the beginning and establish the base that we will build on!

So, please don't hook yourself up to some parachute!

Contact us and see how we can help!
